Letter to the Editor of the Tallahassee Democrat
On October 17 Mary Ann Lindley expressed concerns about the delays in building a performing arts center and the need "to get this show on the road." We share her frustration. Tallahassee deserves to be inspired by live theatre and concerts in the best venue. To build on past efforts, the City and County Commission have now appointed a Performing Arts Center Committee.
The "what" inside a performing arts center - programming, space and technical requirements, acoustics, comfort, accessibility, seat count, governance and finance - is the first factor to be considered. "Where" is best answered after those decisions are made. The Civic Center site could rank high, but it would be premature to commit to any location until we know what to build.
Conversations with FSU about their proposed concert hall are ongoing. FSU's objectives are specific to the School of Music's needs but we will continue to investigate partnership opportunities.
The key to success is community dialogue. Conversations among local performing groups and taxpayers must guide decision-making. Although this takes time, it will lead to success. If all goes according to schedule, critical questions will be answered by summer 2005.
We believe the people of this community will create a performing arts center that is both a cultural and an economic asset. We want your questions and concerns. Check our website at OnWithTheShowTLH.com.
